Nia Orms is an actress, writer, entrepreneur, wife, mother, and the founder of Improvatude, a philosophy born from one of the most difficult moments of her life and transformed into a way of helping people discover who they can become.

More than a decade ago, Nia was preparing for her first live one-woman show, a production she had written, directed, and would perform herself. After months of preparation, just one day before her debut, she received devastating news: her partner had died unexpectedly from an accidental overdose of prescription medication.

Heartbroken and overwhelmed by grief, Nia considered canceling the show.

Backstage, as the audience waited and Nia struggled with whether she could possibly go on, she turned to her friend and asked what she should do.

Her answer was simple:

“Use it, Nia.”

And she did.

Nia walked onto the stage and disappeared into five different characters. For those moments, something extraordinary happened. Her relationship to her pain changed. Each character allowed her to access a different voice, perspective, energy, and way of being.

What began as a performance became a revelation.

Nia realized that sometimes we don't have to wait until we feel strong, confident, courageous, joyful, or capable. We can intentionally step into the qualities we need—and, in doing so, begin to change how we experience and respond to the circumstances in front of us.

That night became the seed of Improvatude.

What began as Nia’s personal discovery grew into a method she could share with others. Over the years, Improvatude has been taught in rehabilitation settings, where its character-based approach has helped people explore new ways of responding to challenges, envision different possibilities for themselves, and practice becoming the person they want to be.

Improvatude is the practice of becoming the character you need to be to create what you truly desire in your life.

For Nia, that doesn't mean pretending to be someone else. It means recognizing that each of us contains many different qualities, perspectives, and possibilities—and learning how to intentionally call upon them when life asks something new of us.

Characters and storytelling have always been central to Nia's work. As an actress and writer, she has created and embodied characters that can be hilarious, vulnerable, outrageous, heartbreaking, and deeply human.

Her exploration of relationships and storytelling also led to an important creative relationship with renowned relationship expert and author Dr. Pat Allen, who guided Nia in the development of her book and the stories within it. Those ideas and observations continue to evolve today, inspiring the characters and storytelling behind Home Garden and Novelas, one of the original series in the Improvatude world.

Nia’s performances have also earned praise from audiences, critics, and some of the most respected voices in entertainment. After seeing Nia perform, legendary producer Quincy Jones praised her range, saying, “This lady’s range knocked my socks off!”

But Nia’s story didn't end on the stage.

She became a successful entrepreneur, building businesses while continuing to create, write, perform, and develop the philosophy behind Improvatude. She has raised a family, built a home and life of her own design, and experienced the many reinventions that come with being a woman whose identity cannot be reduced to one title.

Mother. Artist. Writer. Performer. Business owner. Creator. Partner. Woman.

Each chapter has required a different character.

And that may be the most important evolution of Improvatude itself.

It isn't simply a method for getting through difficult moments. It is a way of approaching change.

There are times in life when the person who got us here isn't quite the person who can take us there. A new season may ask for more courage. More humor. More discipline. More softness. More audacity. More imagination. Sometimes it asks us to rediscover a part of ourselves we thought we had lost.

Nia believes women in particular deserve permission to keep evolving—to build businesses, raise families, create beautiful homes and lives, pursue ambitious ideas, make art, begin again, change direction, and refuse the idea that at a certain age or stage we are supposed to become a finished version of ourselves.

We aren't finished.

We are still becoming.

Today, Nia is bringing Improvatude into its next chapter, drawing from everything she has learned as an artist, entrepreneur, mother, creator, and woman who has had to reinvent herself more than once.
